Anthony Head, the British actor best known for his role as Rupert Giles in the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died at the age of 72. His death was confirmed by his family in a statement released on Sunday. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Head, who was born in Camden Town, London, built a career spanning five decades across stage, film and television. He first gained national recognition in the 1980s for his role in the Gold Blend coffee advertisements, a series that became a cultural touchstone in the United Kingdom. But it was his portrayal of the wise and protective librarian in Buffy the Vampire Slayer that secured his international reputation. The series, which ran from 1997 to 2003, attracted a devoted global following and Head's performance was widely praised for its warmth and gravitas.
Tributes have been from figures across the entertainment industry. Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played Buffy Summers, described Head as “a mentor, a friend and an extraordinary talent”. Joss Whedon, the show's creator, called him “the heart of the show”. The BBC, where Head appeared in several dramas, issued a statement noting his “quiet authority and impeccable comic timing”.
Beyond Buffy, Head appeared in films such as The Iron Lady and television series including Doctor Who, Merlin and Little Britain. He also had a successful stage career, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and in the West End. In 2020, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to drama and charity.
Head is survived by his wife, Sarah Fisher, and their two children. His family has requested privacy as they grieve. A private funeral will be held, with a memorial service planned for later this year.
His death marks the loss of a figure whose work epitomised the understated excellence of British acting. Head leaves behind a body of work that will endure as a testament to his craft.
