LONDON. The Nigerian-born writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has publicly accused an NHS trust of a “deliberate cover-up” following the death of her 13-year-old son at a London hospital last month. In a statement released through her literary agency, Adichie claimed that senior clinicians at St.
Mary’s Hospital, part of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, altered medical records and misled the family about the circumstances leading to her son’s cardiac arrest. The author of *Half of a Yellow Sun* and *Americanah* said the incident had shattered her faith in the institution and called for a public inquiry. The trust has denied any wrongdoing and expressed condolences to the family.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that a referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which is assessing whether a formal investigation is warranted. Adichie’s accusations come amid heightened scrutiny of NHS governance and patient safety protocols. The case has already prompted debate about transparency and accountability in Britain’s state-funded healthcare system.
