James Handy, the American actor best known for his roles in films such as The Hunt for Red October and The Pursuit of Happyness, was stabbed to death in central London late last night. Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. local time near Covent Garden. Handy, 62, was discovered with multiple stab wounds. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. The suspect was apprehended within minutes following a brief foot chase by plainclothes officers.
Commander Alison McIntyre praised the rapid response of her officers. “This was a tragic and violent attack on a visitor to our city. I want to commend the swift actions of our team in detaining the suspect before he could flee the area.”
Handy, a native of New York, was in London for a series of theatre performances. His career spanned four decades. He received critical acclaim for his portrayal of a CIA analyst in The Hunt for Red October (1990) and a homeless father in The Pursuit of Happyness (2006).
The British Embassy in Washington has offered condolences to Handy’s family. The embassy said it was working with US authorities to facilitate the repatriation of his remains.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Jones is leading the investigation. “We are not looking for anyone else at this stage. We are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who saw the altercation outside the theatre,” she said.
The Crown Prosecution Service is expected to decide on charges within 48 hours. Under British law, the suspect can be held for up to 96 hours before being charged or released.
The stabbing has renewed debate about knife crime in London. The Metropolitan Police recorded 11,122 knife offences in 2023, a 7% increase from the previous year. However, the force has maintained that the capital remains safe for tourists.
Handy’s agent, Margaret Chen, released a statement calling him “a consummate professional and a gentle soul”. She added: “Jim brought light to every set. His loss is immeasurable.”
The US State Department issued a travel advisory for London, urging caution in crowded areas. The advisory is standard following a high-profile incident.
The suspect is expected to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court later this week.
