In a stark warning from one of the industry’s most prescient voices, Jack Clark, co-founder of Anthropic, has called for a global pause on autonomous AI development, urging that humanity must remain ‘in the loop’ as these systems evolve. Speaking at a summit in London, Clark, whose company is behind the highly anticipated Claude AI, argued that the rapid pace of AI progress risks outpacing our ability to govern it. ‘We are building intelligence without understanding it,’ he said.
‘We must stop AI developing without humans.’ His comments come as the UK government ramps up its position as a leader in ethical AI, with a new regulatory framework designed to balance innovation with safety. The British approach, which emphasises ‘pro-innovation regulation’, is being closely watched by the global tech community.
Critics, however, warn that the UK’s soft-touch strategy may not be enough to prevent the kind of runaway AI development that Clark fears. The tension between speed and safety has never been more palpable. As Silicon Valley pushes forward with ever more powerful models, the question remains: can we steer this technology before it steers us?
For now, the answer may lie in human judgement, a precious resource that no algorithm can replace.
