The Australian Federal Police have seized a record 2.3 tonnes of cocaine with a street value of £500 million in a joint operation hailed as a landmark victory against international drug cartels. The haul was discovered hidden in a container of marble exported from Malaysia, intercepted at a Sydney warehouse on Monday.
The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) played a pivotal role, providing intelligence through a dedicated cell that tracks global trafficking networks. This collaboration led to the arrests of eight suspects linked to a British organised crime group operating in Australia. NCA Director General Graeme Biggar said the bust disrupts supply chains and protects communities on both continents.
The cocaine, enough for up to 80 million doses, was destined for Australian streets. The operation underscores the importance of cross-border intelligence sharing in the fight against drug trafficking.
