The British Foreign Office has issued an urgent travel warning for Thailand following the arrest of an Australian man charged with the murder of a 12-year-old girl whose body was found inside a suitcase in a hotel room. The suspect, Daniel Paul Dakin, 47, was detained in the resort city of Pattaya on Monday after police discovered the remains of the victim, identified as a local Thai national. The case has reignited concerns over child safety in the kingdom, a destination popular with British tourists.
The Foreign Office statement advised British nationals to remain vigilant, particularly when travelling with children, and to report any suspicious activity to local authorities. Thailand recorded over 500,000 British visitors in 2024, making it one of the top destinations for UK travellers. The incident follows a series of high-profile crimes involving foreign nationals in Thailand, including the murder of a British backpacker in Koh Tao in 2014.
The government has faced criticism over its handling of tourist safety, though officials maintain that violent crime against visitors remains rare. The suspect is expected to face extradition proceedings to Australia, where he also faces charges unrelated to this case.
