In a story that has captured the nation’s heart, a 12-year-old British boy named Alfie Thompson has become an unlikely hero after carrying his pet chicken, Mr. Nibbles, into a hospital in rural Ethiopia. The boy, from Manchester, was on a family trip to visit his grandmother in the village of Debre Berhan when the chicken fell gravely ill.
Witnesses say Alfie, distraught, walked five miles to the nearest clinic, cradling the bird in his arms. Hospital staff, initially bemused, were so moved by his determination that a nurse, Sister Hailu, administered antibiotics to the chicken, which is now recovering. Alfie’s mother, Claire, said: 'He wouldn’t leave Mr.
Nibbles’ side. He said it was his responsibility.' The story has gone viral, but it also raises questions about access to veterinary care in remote regions.
For Alfie, though, it was simple: 'He’s my best friend. You don’t let friends die.' A fundraiser for local animal healthcare has since raised over £10,000.
