The grinding war in Ukraine has entered a new, dangerous phase. Kremlin gains threaten Donbas. Russia is massing forces for a decisive assault on a key Ukrainian city. This is not hyperbole. This is the assessment of senior Western intelligence officials I spoke with this afternoon.
The city in question is Chasiv Yar. A strategic hub. If it falls, the entire Donetsk region tilts. The next line of Ukrainian defences collapses. The road to Kostiantynivka lays bare. Then Kramatorsk.
Sources on both sides confirm the build-up. Tanks. Artillery. Wave after wave of infantry. The Russian military has learned from its mistakes. They are not repeating the initial Kyiv blunder. This is attritional warfare, Soviet style. Relentless. Brutal.
Inside Whitehall, the mood is sombre. A senior defence source told me: "The Ukrainians are running low on shells. They lack air cover. The gap in capabilities is widening." The numbers back this up. Russian artillery advantage is 10:1 in some sectors. The cost in human life is staggering. But Putin is betting he can outlast both Ukraine and the West.
On the political side, cracks are showing. Zelensky’s government is under immense pressure. The promised counter-offensive last year failed to deliver a knockout blow. Morale is fraying. Some Western diplomats whisper about a possible Ukrainian collapse. Others dismiss this as alarmist.
Backbench MPs in Westminster are getting restless. The usual suspects call for more aid. Some on the right demand a more aggressive posture. A few even whisper about boots on the ground. Privately, Downing Street knows that patience in the electorate is finite. The cost of living crisis dominates. Ukraine fatigue is real.
Here is the cold calculus: Russia has the manpower. They are willing to take casualties. Ukraine does not have enough ammunition. The West has not delivered on promises. The next two weeks will decide the fate of the Donbas.
One former British ambassador put it to me bluntly: "If Chasiv Yar falls, the narrative shifts. This is no longer a stalemate. It is a Russian advance. And the political fallout in Kyiv and Western capitals will be severe."
We are watching a pivot point. The Kremlin senses blood. Their propaganda machine is already spinning victory narratives. The question is whether Ukraine can hold. And whether the West will finally deliver the weapons that matter. Not just promises.
The lobby is buzzing. I will keep you posted.
