This is not an accident. This is a deliberate test of our strategic resolve. On Thursday, a Russian warship, believed to be a Steregushchy-class corvette, fired warning shots across the bow of a civilian yacht in the English Channel, approximately 12 nautical miles off the coast of Brixham.
The yacht, registered in the United Kingdom, was reportedly approached by the Russian vessel in an aggressive manner. British naval forces were scrambled, but the Russians had already made their point. London is now demanding a full Nato inquiry into the incident, citing a dangerous escalation in maritime harassment.
This is a classic hybrid warfare tactic: test the response times, gauge the threshold for escalation, and normalise aggressive behaviour in international waters. The English Channel is a Nato maritime artery, and this action is a direct probe of Article 5 commitments. If we do not respond with a coordinated naval presence and diplomatic isolation, we will see more of this.
The Russians are playing chess; we are still wondering if the game has started. I am Dominic Croft, and this is a strategic pivot we cannot afford to miscalculate.
