A group of allied nations, without prior consultation with the United Kingdom, has presented five conditions for a peace settlement in Ukraine. The proposal, which surfaced during informal talks in Brussels, has been met with a firm response from London. British officials described the move as an unfriendly act that undermines the principle of collective decision making within the Western alliance.
The five conditions, which include a ceasefire along current lines, international security guarantees for Ukraine, and the phased removal of sanctions on Russia, were drafted by a coalition led by France and Germany. The UK government, which has been a staunch supporter of Kyiv since the invasion began, was not consulted before the terms were tabled. A senior Foreign Office source said the conditions could lead to a premature settlement that rewards Russian aggression.
The UK has instead reiterated its support for Ukraine’s position that any peace must be based on the full restoration of its territorial integrity. The rift highlights growing tensions among Western allies over the direction of policy towards Russia. While the UK remains committed to military aid and financial support for Ukraine, other nations appear to be exploring diplomatic off-ramps.
The five conditions are expected to be discussed at a summit in Lviv next week, but without British endorsement their viability remains uncertain.
