James Handy, a British actor known for his roles in theatre and independent film, was stabbed to death late last night at his home in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that the suspect, the 19-year-old son of Handy’s girlfriend, has been taken into custody.
Handy, 52, was found with multiple stab wounds at a residential property in the Silver Lake district. Emergency services were called shortly before 11 PM local time, but Handy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, whose name has not been released due to his age, was arrested a few blocks from the residence without incident. Police have not disclosed a motive, though sources close to the investigation suggest a domestic dispute may have preceded the attack.
Handy’s management issued a brief statement expressing shock and grief. “James was a gifted actor and a kind man. This is a devastating loss.” His representative added that Handy had been living in Los Angeles for the past two years, pursuing roles in American productions.
The actor’s credits include the 2017 drama “The Last Summer” and a recurring role in the BBC series “The Village.” He was also a stage actor with the Royal Shakespeare Company for several seasons.
Neighbours reported hearing raised voices earlier in the evening but did not think it unusual for the household. “We heard arguing, but nothing that seemed out of the ordinary,” a neighbour told the BBC. “It was a quiet street until this.”
The girlfriend, who was not at the home at the time of the incident, is cooperating with investigators. The son is scheduled to appear in court later this week, pending formal charges.
The case marks the latest in a string of violent incidents involving British nationals in the United States. The Foreign Office has confirmed it is providing consular support to Handy’s family.
