Daveigh Chase, the American actress best known for her role as the haunted Samara Morgan in the 2002 horror film The Ring, has died at the age of 35. Her death was confirmed by her family in a statement released on Sunday. No cause of death has been given.
Chase’s career began in childhood, with early roles in television series such as Touched by an Angel and Charmed. But it was her portrayal of the ghostly Samara in The Ring, a remake of the Japanese film Ringu, that brought her international recognition. The film was a commercial and critical success, grossing over $249 million worldwide and cementing Chase’s place in horror cinema history.
In Britain, where The Ring was shot and set, Chase’s performance was particularly noted for its chilling stillness and depth. She also provided the voice for the character Lilo in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch (2002), a role that endeared her to a younger generation.
Her death has prompted tributes from colleagues across the industry. Sam Raimi, who produced The Ring, described her as “a singular talent who brought an otherworldly presence to the screen”. British director Gore Verbinski, who helmed the film, said Chase was “the heart of the film’s terror and its humanity”.
Chase’s later career included guest roles in television series and independent films, but she largely stepped away from the public eye in her twenties. Her family has requested privacy during this time.
The loss has been felt acutely within the British film community, where The Ring remains a landmark of the horror genre. Chase’s performance, which involved extensive physical and vocal preparation, is often studied in acting workshops.
She is survived by her parents and a sister.
