A British national has died following a paragliding accident in southern Spain, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has confirmed. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the mountainous region of Sierra Nevada, near the city of Granada. Emergency services were alerted shortly after the man, reported to be in his late 40s, lost control of his glider and crashed into a rocky ravine.
Rescue teams, including a helicopter, were dispatched but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Local authorities have not formally identified the man, pending notification of next of kin. The Foreign Office stated it is providing consular assistance to the family and liaising with Spanish officials.
The Spanish Civil Guard has opened an investigation into the cause of the accident, which is not believed to involve other individuals. Paragliding is a popular activity in the region, though authorities have previously warned of changing wind conditions in the mountainous terrain. This incident adds to a series of fatal paragliding accidents involving British tourists abroad in recent years, raising questions about safety regulations and the adequacy of insurance cover for extreme sports.
