As the UK labour market tightens, a seasoned British recruiter has shared what she calls a ‘golden tip’ for applicants facing rejection after hundreds of submissions. The advice, posted on LinkedIn and since gone viral, suggests tailoring each CV and cover letter to the specific job description, using keywords from the advert to pass automated screening systems. While the tip seems obvious to some, the recruiter emphasises that the majority of candidates still send generic applications.
Critics argue the tip places the burden solely on the individual, ignoring systemic issues like AI bias and the sheer volume of applicants. Others counter that in a competitive market, any edge counts. The debate highlights a growing tension between personal responsibility and structural reform in hiring.
As AI tools become more prevalent in recruitment, many are asking: are we optimising for machines at the expense of human connection?
