The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has launched an urgent review of travel safety advice for the Dominican Republic following the death of a British tourist in a hotel fire. The incident, which occurred at a resort in Punta Cana, has raised questions about fire safety standards at properties popular with British holidaymakers.
According to local authorities, the fire broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, claiming the life of a 34-year-old woman from Manchester. Five other guests were treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation, with preliminary reports suggesting an electrical fault.
The FCO confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family of the deceased and is working with Dominican officials to establish the facts. A spokesperson said: "We are urgently reviewing our travel advice for the Dominican Republic to ensure British nationals have the latest information on fire safety and security measures at hotels and resorts."
The Dominican Republic welcomed over 200,000 British tourists in 2023, making it a significant destination for the UK travel industry. However, concerns over safety have been raised in the past, including reports of food poisoning and crime.
Industry analysts suggest that the review could lead to stricter guidance for tour operators and hotels. "This is a tragic reminder that safety standards can vary widely," said a travel security consultant. "The FCO will be looking at whether current advice adequately reflects risks, particularly around fire safety infrastructure."
Tour operators including TUI and Jet2 have issued statements expressing condolences and confirming they are reviewing their own safety protocols. The Association of British Travel Agents has urged members to ensure compliance with local regulations and to provide clear safety information to customers.
The incident comes at a time when the Dominican Republic is seeking to bolster its tourism sector, which accounts for over 15% of its GDP. The government has pledged to cooperate fully with the review and has reiterated its commitment to visitor safety.
For British tourists planning trips to the Dominican Republic, the FCO advises checking travel advice regularly and ensuring accommodation meets recognised safety standards. The review is expected to be completed within weeks.
