The Foreign Office has issued an urgent advisory for British nationals in Haiti after armed men abducted a senior security official in the capital, Port-au-Prince. The official, whose identity has not been released, was seized from his vehicle on Tuesday evening by a group of heavily armed assailants. The incident underscores the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the country, which has been plagued by gang violence and political instability.
According to the Foreign Office, tourists are being urged to leave Haiti immediately if it is safe to do so, and all non-essential travel to the country should be avoided. The advisory warns that kidnappings for ransom have become increasingly common, with foreigners often being targeted. The British embassy in Port-au-Prince is working closely with local authorities to locate the abducted official and ensure the safety of British citizens.
The kidnapping comes as Haiti grapples with a surge in gang activity following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Armed groups now control large parts of the capital and have been responsible for a wave of abductions, including that of 17 missionaries from the United States and Canada in October 2021. The UN estimates that over 1,000 people have been kidnapped in Haiti in the first half of 2022 alone.
The security situation has been further destabilised by fuel shortages and blockades, which have hampered the ability of authorities to respond to criminal activity. The Foreign Office advises British nationals to maintain a low profile, avoid unnecessary travel, and remain vigilant at all times.
For those currently in Haiti, the British embassy offers consular support but warns that its ability to assist may be limited due to the volatile environment. Travellers are encouraged to register their presence with the embassy and keep friends and family informed of their whereabouts.
This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
