The Eurovision Song Contest is set to admit Canada as a participating nation, a move that Whitehall insiders are quietly celebrating as a win for British cultural diplomacy. The decision, expected to be formally announced later this week, comes after years of lobbying by the BBC and the European Broadcasting Union, with Downing Street clearly pulling strings behind the scenes.
For years, the contest has been dismissed by Brexiteers as a relic of continental kitsch. But the pandemic-era revival, fuelled by Netflix’s “Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga” and the UK’s surprise second place in 2022, has changed minds. Now, the government sees soft power potential. “It’s not just about Terry Wogan’s ghost,” one senior Tory MP told me. “This is a global brand. And we own it.”
The UK, as a permanent member of the ‘Big Five’, underwrites a significant chunk of the contest’s budget. The BBC produces the show. And the rules? They were written in London. Adding Canada is a calculated move. It ties a Commonwealth ally closer to a European institution at a time when the US is wavering on Nato. It also gives the contest a transatlantic foothold, with US broadcasters increasingly interested.
Critics will call it cultural imperialism. They have a point. But those same voices were silent when Australia joined in 2015, another product of British Empire-era relationships. The EBU’s logic is simple: expand the audience, increase revenue, stay relevant. The UK’s logic is deeper: remind Europe that London, not Brussels, is the continent’s cultural hub.
The move is not without risks. Canadian entries could easily outshine the UK’s perennial struggles. And there are whispers of a backlash from purist fans who see Eurovision as strictly European. But the government is betting that the benefits outweigh the embarrassment of another ‘nul points’.
For now, the reaction in Westminster is cautiously optimistic. “It’s a good news story,” a No. 10 source told me. “Not much of those going around.” The contest may be silly. But the politics behind it are anything but.
