Cape Verde achieved the greatest result in their football history on Thursday, holding Spain to a 1-1 draw in their World Cup group stage match in Doha. The island nation, making its tournament debut, took a shock lead through forward Jamiro Monteiro in the 43rd minute. Spain equalised through Alvaro Morata in the 67th minute but could not find a winner against a disciplined Cape Verdean defence.
The result was greeted with jubilation by fans in Praia and across the diaspora. Portugal’s former colony, with a population of just over half a million, is the smallest nation at the World Cup. Captain Stopira said after the match: “This is the greatest feeling ever.
We have made our country proud.” Spain dominated possession with 72 per cent but created few clear chances. Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha made four saves.
The draw leaves Spain second in Group B on four points, one behind Cape Verde. Both teams have one match remaining.
