Dozens of police officers were injured and more than 200 people arrested in France last night after violent clashes erupted during Champions League matches in Paris and Lyon. The unrest, which saw fans throwing flares and bottles at officers and setting cars ablaze, has reignited concerns over security at major football events. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as riot squads deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse crowds near the Stade de France and Groupama Stadium.
Officials confirmed 38 police were hospitalised, including four with serious injuries. The government has pledged a full investigation while football authorities condemned the violence. For families in the working-class suburbs where many of the fans live, the fallout will be felt most keenly in lost wages and strained community relations.
The question now is whether this marks a turning point in fan policing or a symptom of deeper social unrest.
