Dara of Bangaranga, the Irish entry whose victory at the Eurovision Song Contest stunned European audiences, has revealed she came close to abandoning the competition on two separate occasions before ultimately claiming the trophy. The singer, whose stage name references her family’s ancestral village in County Mayo, made the disclosure in an interview with the BBC ahead of the contest’s final. She described periods of intense self-doubt and technical difficulties during rehearsals, which she said nearly prompted her withdrawal.
Her eventual triumph, achieved with a ballad composed by British songwriter Nigel Grimes, has been hailed in Dublin as a cultural coup and a testament to cross-border cooperation. Critics have noted the irony of Ireland’s win being secured with British-made material, given the long-standing rivalry between the two nations in the contest. Dara of Bangaranga is expected to perform at the Royal Variety Performance later this year.
