Daveigh Chase, best known for her voice work as Lilo in the animated Disney franchise Lilo & Stitch, has died. She was 29. The cause was complications related to AIDS, according to a statement released by her family this morning.
Chase’s career began in early childhood with roles in television series including ER and Charmed. Her breakout came in 2002 when she voiced Lilo Pelekai in Lilo & Stitch, a performance that earned her an Annie Award for Outstanding Voice Acting. She also portrayed Rhonda Volmer in the HBO drama Big Love and played the ghost of Samara Morgan in The Ring series.
Her death has prompted tributes from colleagues and fans. Disney released a statement praising her "talent and warmth that brought Lilo to life for millions." Big Love creator Mark V. Olsen described her as "a gifted actress and a sweet soul."
AIDS remains a global health challenge, with approximately 39 million people living with the virus as of 2022. While antiretroviral therapy has dramatically improved outcomes, stigma and access issues persist. Chase’s death underscores the ongoing impact of the disease, particularly among younger demographics.
Chase is survived by her mother, Kathy Chase, and two brothers.
