A new wave of danger is sweeping across Ukraine’s highways, where bus drivers are now risking their lives on some of the most treacherous routes in the country. These are not just potholed roads, but corridors under constant threat of shelling and ambush. The UK has stepped in, funding armoured vehicles to protect drivers who keep supplies and civilians moving.
For the workers behind the wheel, this is a grim daily reality. Yuri, a driver from Kharkiv, described his journey as ‘a lottery with death’. Each mile is a gamble.
The government’s new funding will see 50 armoured buses deployed on key routes, including the notorious Kyiv-Kharkiv highway. But unions say this is a sticking plaster. ‘What about the wages?
The trauma? We need support, not just metal boxes,’ said Olena, a transport union representative. The cost of living is soaring here, and drivers are paid a pittance for facing mortal danger.
The UK’s intervention is welcome, but it’s a sobering reminder of the war’s toll on ordinary workers. No one should have to risk their life to earn a crust.
