A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck just south of Caracas this morning, sending tremors through Simon Bolivar International Airport as passengers scrambled for safety. The quake, which hit at 9:47am local time, cracked runways and shattered windows in the terminal.
Footage from inside shows ceiling panels falling and people diving under seats. The Foreign Office has issued an urgent advisory for British nationals to avoid all but essential travel to Venezuela, citing seismic activity and a deteriorating security situation. This is the third tremor in the region this month.
Emergency services are assessing damage. No casualties reported yet, but the message is clear: if you are in Caracas, get to open ground. If you are planning a trip, cancel it.
