A British charity worker on the ground in Caracas has confirmed a harrowing story that lays bare the maternal mortality crisis gripping Venezuela. The woman, aged 27, died after giving birth in a makeshift clinic when she instructed medics to save her newborn daughter instead of administering life-saving treatment to herself. Sources say she was suffering from a preventable haemorrhage.
The charity, Mothers Without Borders, called the death a ‘stark reminder of what happens when healthcare systems collapse’. Venezuela’s official maternal mortality rate has tripled since 2015, but the real figure is likely higher. International sanctions and hyperinflation have gutted the medical supply chain.
The woman’s daughter is alive but malnourished. This is not a tragedy. It is a slow-motion crime.
