Westminster is waking up to fresh horrors from Myanmar. The junta has reportedly massacred dozens in a rebel-held village. The Foreign Office is furious. Sources tell me the condemnation will be swift and brutal. But the question remains: what can we actually do?
Downing Street is furious. The massacre is being called 'barbaric' by a senior minister. I'm told the language was deliberately chosen. This is not a routine expression of concern. It's a signal.
But here's the rub. The UK's leverage in Myanmar is limited. Sanctions are already in place. Diplomatic channels are all but closed. The junta doesn't care what we say. They care about the balance of power on the ground. And right now, they hold all the cards.
The rebel groups are crumbling. The junta is tightening its grip. This massacre is a message. It says: 'We can do this with impunity.'
Labour is demanding action. The backbenches are restless. They want to see tough new sanctions. They want the junta's generals prosecuted. The Attorney General's office is looking at options. But war crimes cases take years. The dead don't have that kind of time.
What about the UN? The Security Council is gridlocked. Russia and China protect the junta. Britain can lead a coalition of the willing, but that's a weak hand. The US is distracted. France is focused on Ukraine. The junta knows this.
I’m hearing whispers of a coordinated diplomatic push. The Foreign Secretary is calling allies. Expect a joint statement from the G7 later today. But statements are cheap. They don't stop bullets.
The real fear in Whitehall is that this is just the beginning. The junta is emboldened. They have crushed the pro-democracy movement. Now they are moving on the ethnic armed groups. The humanitarian crisis is about to get much worse.
So what does Britain do? We condemn. We express outrage. We call for accountability. But deep down, everyone knows the truth. We are spectators to a genocide. And that is a hard truth for the conscience of the nation.
