Harare’s parliament has voted to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term until 2030, a move critics call a constitutional coup. The amendment, passed by the ruling ZANU-PF majority, bypasses the two-term limit set in 2013. Sources inside the legislature confirm the vote was rushed through without committee debate.
Opposition MPs were ejected for disrupting proceedings. This is a pattern: Mnangagwa has consolidated power since the 2017 coup that ousted Mugabe. The Commonwealth must act.
The UK, as a founding member, has a duty to lead. Silence is complicity. The next CHOGM in October should suspend Zimbabwe unless elections are free and fair.
Without pressure, Zimbabwe slides further into dictatorship.
