The National Health Service has quietly escalated its response to what officials now describe as a public health emergency: phone addiction. Over the past 14 hours, NHS digital detox programmes have seen a surge in referrals, tripling capacity across England. This is not a benign issue.
It is a strategic vulnerability. A population addicted to dopamine hits from social media is a population with compromised cognitive resilience. Threat actors exploit this.
The hardware is the smartphone, the logistics are the data centres, and the intelligence failure is the lack of a coordinated countermeasure. Cognitive warfare is here, and the NHS is now on the front line. The government must realise that every hour spent on a screen is an hour lost to defensive posture.
This is a strategic pivot, and it is long overdue.
