Kinshasa: The Democratic Republic of Congo’s national football team has been placed in mandatory isolation ahead of their World Cup qualifier next week, following a reported outbreak of illness among squad members. The decision, announced by Congolese football federation officials on Thursday, is a precautionary measure to prevent further spread of a suspected viral infection, which has left two players bedridden and five others under medical observation.
The team was due to face Senegal in a crucial Group H match at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa on Monday. Failing to field a fit squad could result in a forfeit, jeopardising their chances of qualifying for the 2026 tournament. Officials have not disclosed the nature of the illness, but local health authorities have confirmed that samples have been sent for laboratory analysis.
This disruption comes at a critical juncture for DR Congo, who currently sit third in the group with six points from four matches. A win against Senegal would keep their qualification hopes alive. However, the isolation order raises questions about the team’s readiness and the integrity of the fixture.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is in contact with local organisers, though no decision has been made regarding postponement. A CAF spokesperson declined to comment on contingency plans but noted that “player welfare remains the priority.”
The episode echoes broader concerns about health protocols in African football, where infrastructure challenges often complicate disease prevention. In 2023, several matches were delayed due to similar outbreaks. For now, DR Congo’s players remain confined to their training camp, awaiting test results. The match hangs in the balance.
