A gang responsible for the theft of a priceless golden helmet from a Dutch museum has been sentenced to prison terms totalling 15 years. The heist, which stunned the art world, saw the 17th-century ceremonial helmet stolen from the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden in 2019. The helmet, crafted for a Frisian nobleman, is valued at €5 million.
British security experts have praised the Netherlands' rapid judicial response, calling it a deterrent for future cultural property crimes. The four perpetrators, all in their 30s, were convicted of aggravated theft. The helmet remains missing, presumed melted down for its gold content.
The case has reignited debates about museum security protocols across Europe.
