The Office for National Statistics has confirmed a 0.3% contraction in GDP for the first quarter, a figure that the Chancellor attributes to 'global headwinds' and pledges 'iron resolve' in response. But let us be clear: this is not merely a cyclical downturn.
The timing aligns with a sustained campaign of disruption emanating from Tehran. Iran's cyber warfare units have been targeting critical national infrastructure, from energy grids to financial systems. The Conti ransomware variant, linked to Iranian state proxies, has been detected in three NHS trusts this month alone.
This is a threat vector designed to destabilise our economy and test our resilience. The Chancellor's rhetoric is welcome, but where is the corresponding surge in defensive cyber budgets? The MoD's cyber command remains underfunded relative to the threat.
If we are to speak of iron resolve, it must be backed by hardened systems and actionable intelligence. Every day of delay is a strategic pivot ceded to the adversary.
