A drone strike on a civilian bus in Russian-occupied southern Ukraine has killed eight people and wounded six others, local officials reported on Wednesday. The attack is the latest in a series of incidents that international observers say may constitute war crimes under the Geneva Conventions. The bus was travelling near the town of Orikhiv in the Zaporizhzhia region when it was struck.
Ukrainian authorities and pro-Russian separatist officials have blamed each other for the attack, but the United Nations has called for an independent investigation. The incident comes as Russia continues its campaign of aerial bombardment on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, with drones and missiles targeting power grids, hospitals, and residential areas. The Kremlin has repeatedly denied targeting civilians, despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
The use of drones in warfare raises complex ethical questions about accountability and the civilian toll of remote warfare. As the conflict enters its third year, the number of verified civilian casualties has exceeded 10,000, with the true figure likely much higher.
