A drone strike tore through a civilian bus in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine on Wednesday, killing eight people and wounding several more. The attack, which took place near the front line in Donetsk region, underscores a grim reality for those trapped in the conflict zone: there is no safe passage, even for those trying to escape. Russian-installed officials blamed Ukrainian forces, while Kyiv denied involvement, calling instead for an international investigation.
But for the families of the dead, the political blame game is little comfort. The bus was carrying civilians, many of them elderly, fleeing the fighting. One survivor described the scene as 'a fireball of screaming'.
The strike comes amid reports of intensified drone warfare on both sides, with civilians paying the heaviest price. Since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022, the United Nations has documented tens of thousands of civilian casualties. In the occupied territories, obtaining food and water has become a daily struggle.
Today, eight people took a bus expecting to reach safety. They never arrived.
