Fifa is scrambling to resolve a ticketing dispute that has left thousands of British fans facing disruption ahead of England’s World Cup match against Iran on Monday. The governing body confirmed it is in urgent talks with Iranian authorities after a reported sale of duplicate tickets threatened to cause chaos at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.
The problem emerged after tickets allocated to Iranian supporters were allegedly resold multiple times through unofficial channels, raising the prospect of clashes over seats. British fans who purchased legitimate tickets through official Fifa platforms have been warned to arrive early to avoid delays. A Fifa spokesperson said: “We are aware of the issue and are working with local organisers to ensure a smooth experience for all ticket holders.”
The Foreign Office has advised UK supporters to carry digital copies of their tickets and to contact Fifa’s dedicated helpline if they encounter problems. Travel companies reported a surge in calls from anxious customers. One tour operator, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “This is exactly the kind of logistical nightmare we feared. People have spent thousands to get here.”
The standoff underscores the broader political tensions surrounding the fixture. Iran has been under scrutiny over its human rights record and its decision to deny visas to British journalists covering the match. The Iranian Football Federation did not respond to requests for comment.
Fifa’s credibility is also at stake. The organisation has faced repeated criticism over its handling of ticket sales for the tournament, which have been plagued by glitches and limited availability. Analysts say the Iran match represents a critical test for Fifa’s ability to manage the complexities of a global event amid geopolitical fault lines.
With kickoff less than 48 hours away, the clock is ticking. For thousands of fans who have travelled across the world, the outcome will determine whether they witness a historic match or a logistical disaster.
