In a dramatic rescue operation that gripped the nation, five survivors have been pulled from a flooded cave system in northern Laos after being trapped for over a week. The group, including two children, was found alive on Tuesday by a team of international divers, with a British cave rescue unit on standby to assist. The operation, ongoing since the cave flooded following heavy monsoon rains, has been fraught with peril.
Rescuers had to navigate narrow, submerged passages with limited visibility. The survivors are now receiving medical treatment in Luang Prabang. ‘This is a miracle,’ said local governor Bouasone Bounsih.
‘We feared the worst.’ The incident has highlighted the risks faced by communities in remote, flood-prone regions, and the critical role of international expertise. The British team, famed for the 2018 Thai cave rescue, remains ready to deploy if needed.
