In a significant development for international efforts to combat child marriage, four men have been taken into custody in Sierra Leone in connection with the forced marriage of a minor. The case, which has drawn support from the UK justice system, represents a landmark in the prosecution of such offences under Sierra Leonean law. The suspects, who have not been named, are accused of participating in the marriage of a 14-year-old girl to an older man, a practice that remains prevalent in parts of the country despite being illegal.
The UK's Crown Prosecution Service has provided legal assistance to Sierra Leone's authorities, signalling a deepening of institutional cooperation between the two countries on matters of human rights and criminal justice. The case is expected to test the robustness of Sierra Leone's legal framework against child marriage, which was criminalised in 2019. Human rights organisations have welcomed the prosecution as a potential deterrent.
Further hearings are scheduled in Freetown next week.
