The aftermath of the Champions League final in Lyon has left French authorities scrambling to contain a wave of urban unrest that erupted late Tuesday night. According to the Ministry of the Interior, 347 individuals have been taken into custody and 62 police officers have sustained injuries following clashes between rival football supporters and security forces. The violence, which broke out in the city centre shortly after the match ended, involved the use of flares, glass bottles, and improvised barricades.
Police deployed water cannons and tear gas to disperse crowds, but order was not fully restored until the early hours of Wednesday. The prefecture has described the scenes as "unprecedented in scale"
for a football-related event in France this decade. The government has announced an emergency meeting on Wednesday afternoon to discuss measures to prevent a recurrence, including potentially banning away supporters from future high-risk fixtures. The incident comes amid heightened tensions over security at major sporting events, following the chaos at the Stade de France during last year's Champions League final.
