The government has announced a nationwide awareness campaign to inform millions of UK households of their entitlement to bill discounts, a move intended to ease the cost of living crisis. The initiative, led by the Department for Business and Trade, targets households on low incomes or receiving specific benefits, including those eligible for the Warm Home Discount and the Energy Price Cap. Officials estimate that up to 3 million eligible households have not yet claimed the support, which can reduce annual energy bills by up to £150.
The campaign will involve direct mail, digital advertising, and partnerships with local authorities and charities. Ministers described the effort as a "blitz" to ensure no eligible household misses out. The announcement comes as inflation remains stubbornly high, and energy prices are expected to rise again in the autumn. Critics, however, have questioned the effectiveness of such campaigns, noting that previous uptake for similar schemes has been slow. The government insists that this more targeted approach will yield better results.
This development underscores the ongoing challenge of ensuring that state support reaches those who need it most, a persistent issue in the UK's social welfare system.
