A coordinated gun attack on Niger’s primary international airport in Niamey has left at least 35 people dead, according to government sources. The assault, which occurred early this morning, targeted both the civilian terminal and a nearby military zone. Heavily armed assailants opened fire on passengers and security personnel before engaging in a prolonged firefight with Nigerien forces.
The country’s interior ministry confirmed that 32 civilians and three soldiers were killed, with over 50 others wounded. No group has yet claimed responsibility, but suspicion is likely to fall on regional jihadist factions operating across the Sahel. The airport has been closed indefinitely, and national borders remain sealed.
The attack represents the most significant breach of security in the capital since the 2021 coup attempt. It is expected to further destabilise a region already grappling with insurgencies and political uncertainty. The United Nations and African Union have condemned the assault, calling for an immediate investigation.
The incident will likely prompt increased international focus on Niger’s fragile security architecture and the broader Sahel crisis.
