The mercury is climbing, and the old certainties are melting away. This week, Germany, Denmark and the Czech Republic have been scorched by unprecedented temperatures, breaking records that have stood for decades. In Berlin, thermometers hit 42.6°C, a figure that would have been unthinkable a generation ago. Copenhagen sweltered under 39.8°C, while Prague recorded 41.1°C, its highest since records began in 1775. The heat is not just a weather event. It is a systems stress test, and our infrastructure is failing.
For those of us who track the intersection of technology and society, this is not about the weather. It is about the user experience of a civilisation. Our cities, our power grids, our transport networks were designed for a climate that no longer exists. They are legacy systems, and legacy systems do not cope with the new reality.
In Germany, the heat has warped railway tracks, causing delays and cancellations across the Deutsche Bahn network. The country’s famed autobahns have seen speed restrictions imposed for fear of asphalt softening. In Denmark, where renewable energy is a point of pride, the heatwave has hit wind power generation as still air settles over the region. The Czech Republic has seen its nuclear power plants reduce output because the rivers used for cooling are too warm. These are not failures of individual decisions. They are failures of system design.
Now, Whitehall is looking nervously at Britain’s own infrastructure. Our railway network, much of it Victorian, is not built for 40°C days. Our water supply system, with its ageing pipes, leaks 3 billion litres a day a figure that will become a crisis when reservoirs run low. Our power grid, increasingly reliant on renewables, faces the same risks as Denmark’s when the wind drops. The Cabinet Office has convened an emergency review, but the question is whether we are asking the right questions.
We need to think of our infrastructure not as a fixed asset but as a computational system that must adapt in real time. This means embedding sensors, using AI to predict failures, and creating redundancy. It means moving from reactive maintenance to predictive maintenance. It means accepting that the old models of climate normality are obsolete.
There is a deeper worry here. Every heatwave, every flood, every wildfire is a reminder that our systems are fragile. The Black Mirror scenario is not a dystopian future of rogue AI. It is a present where our infrastructure fails because we did not update the source code of our civilisation. The heatwave is a debug report. We ignore it at our peril.
