Hezbollah has poured cold water on hopes of a fresh ceasefire in Lebanon. The militant group dismissed diplomatic efforts overnight. Sources close to the negotiations say the Iran-backed faction is confident in its military position. That confidence is a problem for Whitehall.
The Foreign Office had pushed for a renewed truce. Quietly. Through back channels in Beirut and Doha. But Hezbollah’s latest statement is a clear rebuke. They say any ceasefire must include Israeli withdrawal from occupied territories. A non-starter for Tel Aviv.
So the UK is shifting gears. Defence Secretary John Healey has ordered HMS Diamond and a support vessel to the Gulf. The destroyer will join the US-led Task Force 153. The official line: protecting shipping. But ask anyone in the Lobby. This is about deterrence. Sending a message to Tehran.
“The situation is deteriorating faster than we anticipated,” a senior military source told me. “We need assets on the ground. Or rather, on the water.”
The timing is awkward. Healey is already under pressure over defence spending. Labour backbenchers are muttering about ‘mission creep’. The shadow defence team is sharpening its knives. One Tory MP texted me: “More boats, less cash. Classic New Labour.”
But Number 10 is boxed in. The PM can’t afford to appear weak on security. Not with approval ratings hovering below 30 per cent. The hope is that a naval presence buys time. Time for diplomacy. Time for Israel and Hezbollah to rethink.
Yet the omens are poor. Hezbollah’s patron, Iran, is in a belligerent mood. The IRGC has been running exercises near the Strait of Hormuz. Oil markets are jittery. A barrel of Brent is up 4 per cent this week.
Inside the cabinet, there is division. The Foreign Secretary wants dialogue. The Defence Secretary wants deterrence. The PM is trying to straddle both. That never ends well.
One former minister put it bluntly: “We’re sleepwalking into another Gulf crisis. Hezbollah doesn’t want a ceasefire. They want a escalation. And we’re giving them the stage.”
The coming hours are critical. Navy sources say the task group will be in position by Thursday. Hezbollah has promised a response. Probably a rocket barrage. Possibly something bigger.
Welcome to the new normal. Ceasefire rejected. Gunships deployed. Everyone waiting for the next tit-for-tat.
