In a meticulously planned operation, Nigerian troops have liberated hundreds of captives from a Boko Haram mountain fortress in the northeastern state of Borno. The raid, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday, targeted a heavily fortified camp in the Sambisa Forest region, a notorious hideout for the Islamist militant group. Military sources confirm that 320 hostages, mostly women and children, were rescued and are now receiving medical care and psychological support.
The operation, described as one of the most successful in recent years, involved coordinated ground and air assaults, with troops engaging in fierce firefights to breach the camp's defences. For the families of those held, the news brings a sliver of hope in a conflict that has ravaged the region for over a decade. Yet for the thousands still missing, the fight continues.
