A 15-year-old Indian cricketer has set a new world record for the fastest fifty in T20 cricket, scoring 50 runs off just 11 deliveries. The teenager, whose name has not been officially released pending age verification, achieved the feat during a domestic youth tournament in Mumbai on Tuesday.
According to tournament officials, the batsman struck 8 sixes and 3 fours in his innings, reaching the milestone in 11 balls. The previous record of 12 balls was held by West Indies' Chris Gayle and India's Yuvraj Singh in international T20s, though youth records are less formally tracked.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed it is reviewing the footage and score sheets. A spokesperson said the board would issue a statement once the player's age and the veracity of the record are confirmed.
Local cricket coaches have described the innings as a display of unusual power and timing for a player so young. The tournament is part of a grassroots development programme aimed at identifying talent for state-level teams.
Analysts note that while exceptional individual performances at junior level do not always translate to professional success, the feat has generated significant interest in Indian cricketing circles. The player is expected to be fast-tracked into age-group national camps if his age is validated.
The match was part of the Mumbai Cricket Association's under-16 league. The opposing team's captain declined to comment, citing the one-sided nature of the contest.
