The family of an Indian sailor who died under disputed circumstances on a US naval vessel has filed a lawsuit against the US Navy, while the UK Foreign Office has offered consular support, raising questions about accountability and jurisdiction in international maritime labour.
The sailor, named as Rajesh Kumar, 34, from Mumbai, was found dead in his quarters aboard the USS something earlier this month. The family alleges negligence and foul play, claiming the Navy failed to provide adequate medical care and that a cover-up is underway. Their legal action, filed in a US federal court, seeks damages and a full investigation.
The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family, though Kumar was not a British citizen. A spokesperson said: “We are aware of the case and are offering support to the family through our consular services. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.” The involvement of British diplomats suggests the sailor may have had dual nationality or that the ship was in British waters when the incident occurred, though details remain scarce.
This case highlights the precarious position of merchant seafarers and naval contractors from developing nations, who often work under complex legal frameworks. Kumar was employed by a private contractor hired by the US Navy, a common arrangement that can leave workers and their families in legal limbo. Labour rights groups have long criticised the lack of protections for such workers, who may fall outside standard employment laws.
The family’s lawyer, Anita Sharma, said: “Rajesh was a hardworking man who sent money home every month. The Navy has not been transparent about what happened. We want answers and we want justice.” The US Navy has not commented on the lawsuit, citing pending litigation.
For the family in Mumbai, the wait is agonising. Kumar’s wife, Priya, said: “I want to know the truth. He was not sick when he left. How can he just disappear?” The UK’s involvement may pressure the US to cooperate. But for now, the family is left with a lawsuit and a long road ahead.
This is a developing story. More to follow.
