Iran has formally accused the United States of orchestrating a diplomatic blockade, as a dispute over visas for its World Cup delegation threatens to escalate into a full-blown international incident. The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday condemning what it described as a ‘hostile act’ by Washington, which it claims is deliberately obstructing the travel of its national football team and support staff to the United States for the tournament. The crisis began when the US State Department denied or delayed visa applications for Iranian players, coaches, and administrative personnel, citing unspecified security concerns.
Tehran has retaliated by summoning the Swiss ambassador, who represents US interests in Iran, and lodging a formal complaint with the United Nations. The row has reignited tensions between the two countries, which have had no diplomatic relations since 1979. Analysts warn that the standoff could undermine the integrity of international sporting events and further destabilise an already volatile region.
The US State Department has so far declined to comment on the specific case, but reiterated its commitment to processing visas in accordance with US law. Iran has called on the international community to intervene, arguing that the visa denials violate the spirit of the World Cup, a global event meant to foster unity. The situation remains fluid, with both sides digging in for a protracted diplomatic battle.
