Just hours after a US-brokered ceasefire was meant to take hold, Israeli warplanes have bombed a residential area in Beirut’s southern suburbs, killing at least five people and wounding dozens more. The attack, which hit a densely populated neighbourhood in the early hours of the morning, has been condemned by Lebanese officials as a 'blatant violation' of the truce. The agreement, announced by Washington after weeks of shuttle diplomacy, had raised hopes of de-escalation after the deadliest cross-border clashes in years.
Instead, the strike has shattered any illusion of peace, with Hezbollah vowing retaliation and families once again fleeing their homes. For ordinary people caught in the middle, the betrayal feels routine: promises from afar, while the bombs keep falling.
