Israeli air strikes on Gaza City have killed at least 11 people, according to Palestinian health officials, as the United Kingdom called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. The strikes, which hit residential buildings in the Al-Daraj and Al-Tuffah neighbourhoods, brought the total Palestinian death toll since the conflict escalated to more than 1,100. The UK Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, issued a statement urging both sides to agree to a ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave.
The situation is catastrophic," Cleverly said. We need an immediate pause in hostilities to get food, water, and medicine to those who need it."
The Israeli Defense Forces said the strikes targeted Hamas command centres and weapons storage facilities embedded within civilian areas. The IDF accused Hamas of using human shields. The United Nations reported that more than 200,000 people have been displaced in Gaza, with many seeking shelter in UN-run schools.
The World Health Organization warned that hospitals are running out of supplies and fuel for generators. The US, Egypt, and Qatar continue to mediate, but a breakthrough remains elusive. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers search for survivors under the rubble.
