Gaza City. Israeli air strikes killed at least six people in Gaza on Tuesday, including Al Jazeera cameraman Fadi al-Wahidi, as the conflict between Israel and Hamas entered its fourth week. The strikes targeted a residential building in the Nuseirat refugee camp, according to local medical officials. Al-Wahidi, 39, had been reporting on the conflict for the Qatari broadcaster. His death brings the number of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the hostilities to at least 10, according to the International Federation of Journalists.
The Israeli military said it was targeting Hamas infrastructure and operational capabilities. It did not comment on the specific strike that killed al-Wahidi. The deaths come amid a surge in violence following the breakdown of a week-long ceasefire. International mediators, including Egypt and Qatar, have been unable to broker a new truce. The United Nations Security Council is expected to meet this week to discuss the situation.
The conflict has so far claimed over 1,200 Palestinian lives and 35 Israeli lives, as of figures provided by the respective health authorities. The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with the UN warning of a looming famine. Aid deliveries remain severely restricted due to the ongoing fighting and Israeli blockade.
The Al Jazeera network condemned the killing of its cameraman, calling it a deliberate attack on journalists. The Israeli government has not responded to the accusation. Press freedom groups have called for an independent investigation into the incident.
