Jerusalem, March 23 – The Temple Mount, known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, has become the scene of an escalating confrontation. Israeli nationalist groups, defying longstanding diplomatic agreements, have forced entry to the compound under police protection. The move breaks the status quo that has governed the site since 1967, when Israel captured East Jerusalem.
Under these arrangements, non-Muslims may visit but not pray. Today’s incursion, involving hundreds of activists, represents a deliberate provocation. The Palestinian Authority has condemned the action as a violation of international law.
Jordan, the custodian of the Muslim holy sites, has recalled its ambassador. The international community watches with deepening alarm as the fragile stability of Jerusalem’s most sensitive location unravels.
