Kyle Busch, the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, has died from complications of pneumonia and sepsis, his family confirmed on Sunday. He was 39. The driver, known for his aggressive style and 60 Cup victories, was admitted to hospital last week with what was initially described as a severe respiratory infection.
His condition deteriorated rapidly, with sepsis diagnosed 48 hours before his death. The Busch family released a statement calling him a “devoted husband, father, and competitor”. NASCAR chairman Jim France described Busch as “one of the most talented and determined drivers in our sport’s history”.
Busch won the Cup Series title in 2015 and 2019, racing for Joe Gibbs Racing and later Richard Childress Racing. He retired from full-time competition at the end of the 2024 season.
