Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing in La Guaira, Venezuela, following the catastrophic collapse of a residential structure on Tuesday evening. British search-and-rescue specialists are coordinating the international response, drawing on expertise developed in similar urban disasters. The collapse, which occurred in the densely populated coastal city, has left an estimated 47 people missing.
Authorities have confirmed 23 fatalities. The UK contingent, deployed under the auspices of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group, has brought specialised equipment and canine units. The operation is complicated by unstable debris and the threat of secondary collapses.
Local officials have appealed for international assistance, citing overwhelmed medical facilities. The collapse is believed to have been triggered by structural failures compounded by recent heavy rainfall. The UK Foreign Office has confirmed that no British nationals are among the casualties.
The search is expected to continue for several more days.
